Chapter Seventeen

The Conclave

As the reality of being on an alien space station many light-years from Earth because of Ellen’s ‘angel’ dreams smacked me in the face, I realized I had no choice. Like it or not, I was now the ambassador for the entire human race.

James downloaded more security programs from the ship. Using those programs—and I think no small amount of his own genius—he managed to get access to every system in our embassy through his laptop, which he had by now fully restored. He also managed to find a way to recharge both his computer and wheelchair batteries, using some advanced wireless power technology of our Skleth hosts.

We spent a lot of time scanning the enclave’s database via the wall screens. James told us his security programs would cover our tracks. I worked on the navigation problem, with my astronomy background and all. Ellen and James studied the station. Every few hours, we met and discussed what we learned over sweetened cheese paste and water. We slept whenever we felt tired, for as long as we needed. Something about the lower gravity and lack of sunlight messed up our bodies’ natural clocks, so we slept only a few hours at a time. Days slipped by, as measured by my watch, which was out of sync with the Earth we'd left behind due to relativistic time compression. How long had we been away from home? What happened in the time we were away? What about our parents?
